There is a growing agreement that something is seriously wrong with America. The richest nation in the history of the world has millions of citizens mired in poverty. This nation with the most splendid hospitals has a relatively low life expectancy. Of course, each major party claims they are fine; the problem is all with the other guys. We know this is false because the problems remain no matter who controls the White House or Congress. The great failures of America are not passing glitches; they are enduring features baked into the system. Followers of third parties realize that both the rich Democrats and wealthy Republicans benefit from the failures and in spite of all their promises have shown no serious interest in changing the system. This has been going on for at least half a century, so don’t blame it on either Trump or Biden.

Having retired from a career in college teaching in Illinois, I moved to Columbia and decided to see what I could do to help. As a social psychologist, I spent my life talking about social problems, it was time to get to work on them. The Green Party seemed to me to be the alternative party most likely to be able to put America on a better path. Greens realize that a corrupt system of manipulating corporations and special interest groups and manipulated politicians are behind America’s failures in health care, jobs, and education. If we choose, America is rich enough to supply all its citizens with decent health care, shelter, diet, and education. It is not rich enough to afford to invade or push around every nation the elite wants to control.

If I get elected to Congress, there will be at least one Congressman who will seek legislation to strengthen Social Security and Medicare by taxing interest, dividends, and capital gains. In addition to being the unusual politician who wants to raise taxes, I would also try to destroy jobs. I would start by eliminating work as CIA torturer. Jobs for tax accountants and tax lawyers could be eliminated by adopting a simple, fair tax system. The warfare state could shed lots of jobs when we move toward a peaceful world.
